Prompt 1: “QUESTIONNAIRE FOR SELF-REFLECTION Assess yourself by rating your agreement with the following statements: 1 = strongly disagree, 5 = strongly agree. I am very good at… making my impact on student learning visible. using methods for making my impact on student learning visible. I know perfectly well… that student achievements make my impact visible. that student achievements help me to maximize my impact. My goal is always to… evaluate my impact on student learning. use multiple methods of measuring student achievement to assess my impact on student learning. I am thoroughly convinced… that I need to evaluate my impact on student learning regularly and systematically. that I need to use student learning to asses my impact”(Hattie & Zierer, 2018).
In terms of being very good at making my impact visible and using methods to make them visible I would rate myself a ‘3’. This is because I feel like I do this but not all the time and I can also improve in many ways by learning new methods of showing my impact on student learning. In terms of my goal to always evaluate my impact and to use multiple methods to measure achievement I would rate myself as a 4. This is because my intention and drive to make my impacts are there even though I might not achieve them all the time. Lastly, I would like to rate myself a 5 on being convinced that I need to evaluate my impact regularly and also needing student learning to asses that.
How do this week’s readings relate to analyzing state EL assessment data to help you positively impact learning for EL students?
Right off the bat, I resonated with the title of chapter 1, titled “I am an evaluator of my impact on student learning” (Hattie & Zierer, 2018). This is because it reminds myself that I need to be able to evaluate my own impact on my students by being able to evaluate them and give them constant feedback for them to grow as students. The feedback that I am able to give my students will help them achieve academically. On that note, formative assessments the best way for me to give feedback to my EL students. Not only does it allow me to give them feedback but also allows me to track their progress and see what I might even need to work on with them in forms of ELD.
How can you positively impact your teaching of EL students in your classroom by using formative assessments?
One way that I can positively impact my teaching of EL students is by giving them feedback faster after completing a formative assessment. I want them to be able to see how they did so that they can know what they need to improve on or continue working on. It will also help them to gain confidence if they are doing well.
Prompt 2: How do this week’s readings relate to analyzing state EL assessment data to help you positively impact learning for EL students?
“It is time to develop a culture of exchange and cooperation in our schools so we can harness the power of collective intelligence to the benefit of learners as well as teachers,” (Hattie & Zierer, 2018). I can think of no better way to start out this response than by emphasizing the importance of collective intelligence. Although this was not part of the reading for last week I did read this section and found it extremely enlightening. Working with peers to use effective techniques that have been tried and shown positive results. In my experience, we hold many data meetings in different groups to evaluate and look at it in various ways. I have met one on one, with the 8th-grade group and with the 5-8th grade ELA teachers. This helped me see different aspects of the data and apply necessary interventions based on particular results.
How can you positively impact your teaching of EL students in your classroom by using formative assessments?
I think of formative assessments as a quick check that allows me to see what aspects I need to work on with a student to master a particular standard. Whether this is the student’s confidence level or the need for further practice, I am able to reveal the next steps I should take by using formative assessments. One technique I use for my EL students is to have them verbally explain the expectation because they are often able to give me an auditory explanation more efficiently than a written one. Once I am able to determine any misinterpretations they have, we can discuss, reiterate and then move on to written expression.
