The legacy of profits from the slave trade continues to raise ethical questions today. Scholars have uncovered evidence to suggest that many multinational corporations, banks, insurance companies, churches, universities, and wealthy individual families can trace their wealth to earlier slave merchants. What are the ethical implications of these connections when the original profiteers are no longer living—who is guilty? Who is responsible? Are apologies and reparations appropriate or even possible?
In preparation for our discussion be sure to watch Traces of the Trade: A Story from the Deep North (Links to an external site.) (2008) [Video File, 1:26:02] as well as read and listen to:
Constitutional Rights Foundation, “Reparations for Slavery (Links to an external site.)?”
CARICOM Reparations Ten-Point Plan (Links to an external site.)
Jonathan Holloway, “Caribbean Nations Seek Slavery Reparations (Links to an external site.),” The Tavis Smiley Show Podcast
Based on the reading and the documentary film, consider the following questions in a post of at least 250 words:
What is the justification for having nation-states make reparations for the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade and how have such proposals progressed in various nations?
How has the DeWolf family framed reparations as an issue for individuals and families? What actions have they taken and how effective are these actions?
What do these stories tell us about the wider collective guilt over the slave trade and the argument for reparations?
Discuss these issues with at least two of your classmates. Be sure to monitor and respond to feedback to your major thread post throughout the module.
Your initial post must substantively integrate evidence from the assigned readings, including at least two full citations in proper APA (Links to an external site.) or Chicago (Linluvks to an external site.) style.
