Our lives are filled with measurements, and many of these measurements have to be compared to a standard in some way. In this lab class, you are performing several titrations, which seems appropriate for an introductory chemistry class. But It may surprise you to learn that titrations are used for many of the kits, instruments, services, and products that we use in our everyday lives.
Some examples of products or processes that use titration include, but are not limited to:
Water testing kits (ex. well, aquarium, pool or hot tub. Do not use the titrations that are used in the labs in Week #6, Week #7, or Week #9.)
Medical uses (ex. pregnancy, urinalysis, blood glucose, drug administration)
Food industry (ex. fat, vitamin, salt or sugar content)
Biodiesel production
Beer and wine industry
Environmental monitoring
Requirements: FOLLOW THESE REQUIREMENTS
1. Explain the process of titration in your own words. 2.Include these terms: titrant, analyte, equivalence point, end point.
3. Choose a process or product that involves a titration in its performance or production.
4. Describe the titration in detail. What chemicals are involved? What special equipment is needed? Write any relevant equations. How is the end point measured?
5. Show a sample calculation for the titration.
