Air pollution is a mixture of gases and solid particles in the air around us. Large cities are often plagued with high levels of air pollution due to factories releasing chemicals in the air, emission from vehicles, dust, mold and other pollutants. Air pollution is suspected to cause increases in temperatures in the climate.

Step 1: Use the simulator to observe different patterns of air pollutants when put in different conditions. You may reset the simulator by clicking the refresh arrow at the top left of the page. The idea is for you to see what affects the different variables have on air pollutants, so spend time just adjusting each variable and watching for increases or decreases in the air pollutant graph. To start the simulator, hit the play arrow. Make adjustments to each variable by moving the toggle bar under the variable. Notice the graph is measuring “Air Quality” over time.

Step 2: Choose 3 variables for your study. Your variables will be either: wind, temperature, sunlight, rain, cars, car pollutions, electric cars, power plants or power plant pollution. You will be adjusting ONLY these 3 variables after hitting the “REFRESH” button to bring all levels back to the starting point.

Step 3: Make a claim about the 3 variables you have chosen and the effect increasing or decreasing these will have on air quality. Your claim will be something like, “If the level of calcium and potassium in my diet is increased and I begin to exercise, then my bone density levels will increase”. Notice the 3 bold variables in the claim listed.

Step 4: You will need to run the test according to your claim. Click the link below to open the simulator.

Step 5: Provide evidence for your claim. This evidence may or may not support your particular claim. You can obtain evidence by pausing the simulator and clicking the “zoom” button at the top right of the graph. This will enable you to gather evidence for your readings. You will need to provide at least 5 readings from the graph.

Step 6: The last step will be to write a summary of your claim and evidence. You will support your claim by writing a reasoning conclusion. Make sure to repeat your claim and provide evidence, but also summarize what you saw in the simulator.

Student submissions will vary greatly based on the variables chosen. Students should have a claim (hypothesis), evidence (provided by graph) and reasoning (conclusion).The report should be typed in a word processing document, such as: MS Word
