“The Lady of Shalott” (1842), (Links to an external site.) by Alfred, Lord Tennyson
<
<

<
<
*For this essay prompt, you will not only be analyzing the poem, but you will also be asked to examine and discuss at least one artistic representation.
<
<
In Tennyson’s poem, “The Lady of Shalott” (1842 text), the Arthurian backdrop to the Lady’s confinement helps to weave in (pun intended) the believability of magic and curses. The setting helps to reinforce the suspension of disbelief and acceptance of magic since Camelot is also popularly known as home to the famous mage, Merlin.
<
<
The poem touches upon a number of topics, including power, gender, choices, and living a passive life. The Lady of the poem has also been depicted in paintings many times since the poem was published, with some of the most popular paintings including The Lady of Shalott, by William Holman Hunt, and I Am Half-Sick of Shadows, Said the Lady of Shalott, by John William Waterhouse.
<
<
Prompt:
<
<
Analyze the ways in which Tennyson uses poetic devices to convey theme(s) of “The Lady of Shalott.” Be sure that you are using the 1842 text and not another version.
<
<
Additionally, extend your analysis by discussing how Hunt and/or Waterhouse effectively (or ineffectively) capture the same theme(s) of the poem in their painting(s) of The Lady. You may wish to consider symbolism, placement of objects, describing fine details, line, color, form, etc. when discussing the artwork. This is part of the prompt also, so be sure to address it as well as the poem!
<
<

<
<
*Note: At least one poetic device must be something primarily associated mainly with the poetry genre (such as sound devices, particular poetic forms or structures, enjambment, etc.).
<
<
**Note: The artwork will not count as your required outside sources since at least one (though you can use both) is already required for the prompt. You will still need two additional outside academic sources beyond the poem and paintings.
