Prepare a list of at least 3 questions to ask the musicians you are observing or joining with to participate in music making. These need to be separate questions from the research questions you explored during Week 6. Think of open-ended questions that will encourage the musicians to share significant information about their experiences making music.
These are some examples of the kind of questions you might want to ask your interviewee:
- What inspires you when creating this style of music?
- Why did you choose that name for the band?
- How much time do you practice before a concert?
- How do you define your music?
- Where did your musical art or soul originate?
- How long have you been playing (his/her instrument)?
- Do you play any other musical instrument?
- What is your favorite musical venue?
- Would you consider music your passion in life and is it your full-time occupation?
- Was there ever a time when you wanted to stop playing music? When/why?
- Who/what inspires you (musically) the most?
- What is your favorite genre of music and why?
- What musical training have you had?
- What advice would you give future musicians?
- Do you have a musical family?
- Who is your main influence?
- When performing at a venue, what is the first thing you notice?
- Do you have any ambition to learn another instrument?
- What are your future plans as a musician?
- Were you influenced by old records and tapes? Which ones?
After you create the Interview Questions, write a few sentences about the preparations you have made for compiling your observations of music making as a participant or observer. Where are you in the process? Are all of your preparations in place?
Submit the list of questions and information about your preparations for compiling your observations at the Fieldwork Project Interview Questions link. You will receive feedback so you will know that you are on the right track before completing the final version of your Fieldwork Project during Week 8.
